San Lorenzo Players Skip Training Over Unpaid Wages Ahead of Quarterfinal Clash
Just days before a critical quarterfinal matchup against Argentinos Juniors, San Lorenzo’s squad has taken a drastic step. According to TyC Sports, the players refused to train on Thursday morning in protest over unpaid wages dating back to February.
The decision was made in the dressing room after a meeting among senior players. Despite attempts from club officials to intervene, the team stood firm. Head coach Miguel Ángel Russo is reportedly supportive of the players’ stance, as tensions between the squad and management escalate.
This latest episode adds to a growing institutional crisis. San Lorenzo currently faces four active transfer bans, nearly $2 million in debt, and mounting political unrest following president Marcelo Moretti’s leave of absence amid a corruption probe. Moretti now faces challenges within the club’s Ethics Tribunal.
On the field, Russo is expected to maintain most of his lineup for Monday’s 7 p.m. showdown in La Paternal. The only forced change would be Ignacio Perruzzi replacing the suspended Elián Irala. Nicolás Tripichio, nursing a wrist injury, is expected to play with a special wrap.
Projected XI: Orlando Gill; Ezequiel Herrera, Jhohan Romaña, Gastón Hernández, Elías Báez; Perruzzi, Tripichio; Ezequiel Cerutti, Íker Muniain, Malcom Braida; Andrés Vombergar.
