Saka Celebrates His Nigerian Heritage
Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka has spoken openly about how much his Nigerian roots mean to him, explaining that his upbringing and family background continue to shape his life both on and off the pitch.
Although he was born and raised in England and later chose to represent the Three Lions after being approached by the Nigeria Football Federation, the 24-year-old has remained closely connected to the culture and traditions of his parents, who grew up in Nigeria.
Saka’s bond with the country was clear ahead of the 2022 World Cup when he partnered with the children’s charity BigShoe to fund 120 surgeries for kids in Kano. The procedures treated serious conditions such as inguinal and umbilical hernias and brain tumours, giving many children a chance at better health.
He credits his parents for guiding his values. Speaking to the BBC, he said:
My name is Bukayo Moses Ayoyinka Temidayo Saka. I am very proud of it (my Nigerian roots)… Both my parents grew up in Nigeria, so many of their values have been instilled in me.
In 2023, he was received by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu during a visit to Lagos.
