Rwandan Championship: Al-Hilal and Al-Merreikh Choose Their New Destination
For the 2025/2026 season, Sudanese clubs Al-Hilal and Al-Merreikh will participate in the Rwandan championship. This decision follows authorization received from the Rwandan Football Federation, FERWAFA, after their previous season in Mauritania.
The two teams chose Rwanda as their new home due to the uncertain security situation in their country of origin. Initially, they had considered going to Libya, but ultimately opted for the Rwandan championship. Last season, Al-Hilal distinguished itself by winning the title in Mauritania, while Al-Merreikh was eliminated in the first round of the CAF Champions League by Lupopo.
Participation in the Rwandan championship represents an opportunity for these clubs to continue competing at the international level.
In a statement, FERWAFA confirmed the registration of the two clubs. The executive committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) also gave its approval for this participation, thus strengthening the ties between Sudanese and Rwandan football.
