Russo Takes the Blame as Boca Exit Club World Cup Without a Win
Boca Juniors ended their Club World Cup campaign with a disappointing draw against Auckland City, and head coach Miguel Ángel Russo didn’t shy away from criticism. “Knowing the result of Benfica vs. Bayern cost us,” he told DSports, acknowledging that the team entered the second half already aware of their elimination. The mental blow, coupled with a lengthy stoppage after Auckland’s equalizer, disrupted Boca’s rhythm.
“Until their goal, it was all ours. After that, it still was,” Russo insisted, though he didn’t ignore the team’s recurring flaws. “It’s the third goal from a set piece we’ve conceded — that has to change.” During the press conference, he took full accountability: “I take responsibility for everything.”
Looking ahead, Russo urged patience. “The foundation is there, we just need calm,” he said, while thanking fans for their support. Edinson Cavani, back in the starting XI, echoed the coach’s sentiments: “It’s a shame it ended like this, but we grow from it. The bitter taste of Matchday 1 caught up with us today.” Boca now turns its focus to rebuilding for the domestic season.
