Russia Pushes for ‘Non-Qualified World Cup’ as Nigeria Named Among Possible Participants
Nigeria may return to a global football stage after reports revealed that Russia is proposing a special tournament for countries that failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. According to WorldSoccerTalk, the competition would run during the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico and feature only non-qualified nations.
Russia, excluded from FIFA and UEFA competitions since 2022, is reportedly using the idea to regain international visibility. Nigeria is among the countries being considered. The Super Eagles missed out on the expanded 48-team World Cup after finishing behind South Africa in the qualifiers and then losing 4–3 on penalties to DR Congo in the African playoff final. Before that, they had defeated Gabon 4–1 after extra time.
The proposed event may include eight to twelve teams, such as Russia, Serbia, Greece, Chile, Peru, Venezuela, Nigeria, Cameroon, China and possibly Armenia. It would be played in four stadiums used during the 2018 World Cup.
Although the plan is still unofficial, it offers Nigeria a chance to regroup, test new players and stay competitive ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Whether countries—especially in Africa—will accept Russia’s invitation remains uncertain due to scheduling, political concerns and questions about FIFA recognition.
