Rumors Denied: Maravilla Martínez Not in Argentina Call-Up Plans
Adrián “Maravilla” Martínez’s impressive form with Racing sparked speculation about a potential call-up to the Argentina national team. The striker scored again against Aldosivi in the Apertura, boosting Racing’s hopes of advancing, and soon after, reports surfaced linking him to Lionel Scaloni’s squad for the upcoming FIFA dates. However, those rumors were quickly dismissed.
Journalist Fernando Czyz first mentioned the possibility, and it was picked up by Racing fan accounts. But Tomás Dávila of ESPN, who closely follows the club, shut down the speculation, posting: “No one from the Argentina national team staff has contacted Adrián Martínez.”
Despite being 32, Martínez remains one of the most effective strikers in Argentina. Since joining Racing, he’s scored 40 goals and provided 10 assists in 63 appearances, helping the club win the 2024 Copa Sudamericana and the 2025 Recopa. Scaloni has previously said the national team monitors all Argentine players worldwide, but for now, Martínez remains off the list.
Racing is currently seventh in Group A of the Apertura, just inside the qualification zone. They’ll host Central Córdoba next and continue their Copa Libertadores campaign, where they have a win over Fortaleza and a home loss to Bucaramanga. Martínez, meanwhile, will look to keep proving he belongs at the next level.
