According to a West Yorkshire Police spokesperson, the charges stem from an investigation conducted by the Calderdale Adult Safeguarding Team, based on a report filed in April 2024.
In response to the charges, Bradford Bulls immediately severed ties with Appo, who had been with the team since 2023.
"Given the circumstances, the club is duty bound to make no further comment at this stage. The search for a suitable, quality replacement is underway," the club said in a statement.
Appo is also a member of the Papua New Guinea national team, having represented his country in the 2021 Rugby League World Cup. Before joining the English club, he played for the PNG Hunters in the Papua New Guinea domestic league from 2020 to 2022.
The athlete has been released on bail and is scheduled to appear before Bradford Magistrates' Court on January 6.
