Even the greatest football rivalry takes a back seat when faced with human tragedy.

Details: Cristiano Ronaldo has publicly offered words of support to Lionel Messi, who is going through one of the most difficult periods of his life. The father of the Argentine legend, Jorge Messi, passed away at the age of 68 after a prolonged illness.

After Messi's emotional post on social media, Ronaldo didn't stay indifferent. The Portuguese icon sent his long-time rival a brief but heartfelt message.

“A big hug to you and your loved ones in this tough time, Leo. Stay strong,” Ronaldo wrote.

This gesture is especially symbolic given the years-long rivalry between these two football legends. Throughout much of their careers, Ronaldo and Messi have battled for the game's biggest team and individual trophies. Yet, in a moment of personal loss, the Portuguese star chose to put their football rivalry aside.

Jorge Messi passed away in Rosario after a long illness. Throughout his son's career, he remained one of the most important figures alongside Lionel: supporting him from a young age, handling his football affairs, and for many years serving as his representative.

Reminder: Everything has changed? Lionel Messi makes an unexpected decision after family tragedy.
