Romain Folz Explains Offensive Shift at Sundowns: How He Changed the Attack Under Mngqithi
In response to the tactical adjustment that took place under Manqoba Mngqithi's tenure, former Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach Romain Folz stated that he took the initiative to alter the team's attacking approach.
Sundowns were renowned for their skillful passing game under Rhulani Mokwena. But under Mngqithi, the squad shifted its emphasis from ball possession to aggressive attacking play, which infuriated supporters who thought the team had lost its identity.
Folz, who was in charge of the offensive departments, explained that their aim was to make Sundowns more versatile in attack to handle various types of opposition. Despite scoring heavily in key matches, including a 5-0 Carling Knockout victory over Golden Arrows and a 4-0 win against Kaizer Chiefs, he believes the team could have been even more prolific.
Mngqithi and Folz were both dismissed after a series of disappointing results, including a shock Carling Knockout final loss.
