Rojo’s Future in Doubt as Boca Eyes Defensive Reinforcements

Marcos Rojo, a key figure and one of Boca Juniors’ current captains, may be nearing the end of his time at the club. As Planeta Boca Juniors reports, Boca’s active search for a new left-sided center-back has cast doubt on Rojo’s role going forward. His contract expires in December, and there are no clear signs of a renewal on the horizon.
The looming 2025 FIFA Club World Cup complicates matters further. Ayrton Costa, another option in defense, has visa issues that could keep him out of the tournament in the U.S. Boca’s intent to reinforce that area may reflect long-term planning, potentially sidelining Rojo from future plans under new manager Miguel Ángel Russo.
In a recent interview, Rojo acknowledged the uncertainty with characteristic frankness: “If they want me to stay and I feel comfortable, I’ll stay. If not, I’ll shake hands and thank them for these years.” At 34, the former Manchester United defender is at a career crossroads, with a key conversation still pending with Juan Román Riquelme and the club’s leadership.
