The Algerian international has made his mark on the history of African football on the world stage.

Riyad Mahrez distinguished himself on Tuesday 23 June during the second match of the group stage between Algeria and Jordan at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He played a key role in the Fennecs’ 2–1 victory in Group J.

At the age of 35 years and 4 months, Riyad Mahrez provided the assist that allowed Nadhir Benbouali to equalise for Algeria in the 69th minute. This makes him the oldest African player to provide an assist at the World Cup since Roger Milla. The former Cameroonian international achieved this feat on 1 July 1990 against England, when he was 38 years and 1 month old.
