With a spot in the Copa Libertadores round of 16 secured and their domestic season halted, River Plate have turned their focus to the FIFA Club World Cup, where they’ll face Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds on June 17 in Seattle. According to TyC Sports, Urawa arrive in mixed form, sitting fifth in the J-League and having won just once in their last five matches.

Urawa earned its World Cup berth by winning the 2022 AFC Champions League but has struggled to replicate that success domestically, where they haven’t lifted the league title since 2006. The team most recently drew 0-0 with Cerezo Osaka and holds a record of eight wins, six draws, and five losses, with a goal tally of 24 for and 19 against.

Prior to their recent dip, the Reds had picked up five wins in six games, suggesting a brief resurgence. Still, they trail league leaders Kashima Antlers by six points and remain an unpredictable opponent.

River, meanwhile, are also searching for consistency. Marcelo Gallardo’s side was recently eliminated on penalties by Platense and drew 1-1 with Universitario at home. Despite the shaky form, the Argentine giants are expected to take the edge when they open their Club World Cup campaign at Lumen Field.
