River Launches Fresh Bid for Vélez Starlet Maher Carrizo
River Plate are stepping up their pursuit of Maher Carrizo, the 19-year-old winger from Vélez Sarsfield, who has been one of Argentina’s brightest prospects this year. According to TyC Sports, the move will now proceed without any involvement from the City Group, as initially rumored. The Millonario's board will negotiate directly with Vélez following a personal request from head coach Marcelo Gallardo.
Carrizo has caught attention with his performances in the Copa Libertadores, scoring four goals and providing one assist in six appearances. A standout at the South American U-20 Championship, he combines pace, dribbling skill, and positional versatility, often cutting inside from the right to exploit his strong left foot. His profile fits River’s need to replace Franco Mastantuono, who recently left the club.
While his release clause stands at $16 million, Vélez may be willing to consider lower offers, as hinted by current manager Guillermo Barros Schelotto. With previous interest from top sides and a clear path to the first team, Carrizo is viewed as a strategic signing for River’s future.
Having already made bids for Juan Portillo and Matías Galarza from Talleres, River are now targeting one of the domestic market’s most exciting young players.
