River Face Must-Win Finale vs Inter in Club World Cup Group Decider
River Plate enter Wednesday’s final Group E clash of the Club World Cup knowing their future hangs in the balance. After a 3-1 win over Urawa and a 0-0 draw with Monterrey, the Argentine side sit atop the standings with four points and a +2 goal difference, but nothing is guaranteed.
A win or a 2-2 (or higher) draw against Inter would see Marcelo Gallardo’s side advance to the Round of 16. However, a 0-0 or 1-1 result means River would need Monterrey to fail to beat Urawa. A loss would only keep them alive if the Mexican side also drops points.
The tournament’s head-to-head tiebreaker rules complicate matters further. With River not scoring against Monterrey, they must find the net against Inter to have a chance in any three-way tie scenario. The group’s fate will be decided over 90 tense minutes in Seattle.
