RIP. Super Bowl legend has died
American football is mourning the loss of one of its most iconic figures.
Details: Legendary NFL player and former Chicago Bears head coach Mike Ditka has died at the age of 86. His family announced his passing on Friday, October 9, confirming the heartbreaking news in an official statement. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
Ditka enjoyed an extraordinary career in American football, first establishing himself as one of the NFL's greatest tight ends. He represented the Chicago Bears, Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys, winning championships with both Chicago and Dallas.
However, his greatest coaching achievement came with the Chicago Bears. Appointed head coach in 1982, Ditka led the franchise to a historic triumph in Super Bowl XX, where his team demolished the New England Patriots 46-10 in January 1986.
Nicknamed Iron Mike, Ditka became a symbol of Chicago sports. His death prompted tributes from the Bears, the NFL and the wider American football community, with the franchise describing his contribution to its history as immeasurable.
It is worth noting that Ditka became the first tight end inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1988. He was also named NFL Coach of the Year twice, in 1985 and 1988.
