Details: Moroccan women's football is mourning the loss of 20-year-old Faten Ben Amar El-Azizi. The young Maghreb Atlético Tetouan player drowned while attempting to swim across the border to reach the Spanish city of Ceuta.
Faten hoped to make it to Spain and start a new chapter in her life. Maghreb Atlético Tetouan emphasized that the young woman was not seeking fame or adventure, but rather the chance to build a better future on the other side of the border.
However, the dangerous attempt to cross the sea ended in tragedy. The footballer was swept away by a strong current and drowned. Her death was also reported by the Moroccan Union of Professional Footballers.
The tragedy unfolded against the backdrop of a massive migration crisis at the border between Morocco and Ceuta. According to media reports, tens of thousands of people have attempted to cross the border en masse, with the number of deaths estimated in the dozens.
It's worth noting that Faten played as a midfielder and was considered one of Morocco's most promising young footballers. She previously represented Morocco Athletic Tanger as well.
