Revolution! UEFA rewrites yellow card rule in European competitions

UEFA has decided to give players a greater margin for error.

Details: The UEFA Executive Committee has officially raised the automatic suspension threshold for yellow cards in men's club tournaments starting from the 2026/27 season. Beginning with the first match of the league phase in the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League, a player or team official will now miss the next match after four bookings, instead of three.

Importantly, the rule remains unchanged for the qualifying rounds: up until the start of the league phase, suspensions will still be triggered after the third yellow card.

After the first suspension, the next ban will come after every two additional cautions—following the sixth, eighth, and every subsequent even-numbered yellow card.

UEFA explained the decision by pointing to the expansion of the league phase in the Champions League and Europa League from six to eight matches. With more games, the previous limit posed a disproportionately high risk of suspensions. The same rule has been extended to the Conference League, even though its main stage still features six rounds. The changes take immediate effect.
