Renard Sets Ambitious Goals for Saudi Arabia’s Guest Run at the Gold Cup
Hervé Renard has returned to lead Saudi Arabia at a critical moment, with the national team still battling for a spot in the 2026 World Cup and now preparing for a highly anticipated guest appearance at the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup. Speaking this week, the French tactician made it clear: Saudi Arabia is aiming for more than just participation, Inside World Football reported.
Drawn into Group D alongside the United States, Haiti, and Trinidad & Tobago, Saudi Arabia faces a unique challenge. Seven of their regulars will miss the tournament due to Club World Cup duties with Al-Hilal, yet Renard sees this as an opportunity. “It’s a chance to test new players and gain valuable international experience,” he said.
Renard acknowledged the rapid growth of Saudi club football, but noted that the influx of foreign stars has reduced playing time for local talent. “That’s the biggest challenge—keeping the national team strong despite limited minutes for key players,” he explained.
His immediate target for the Gold Cup? Advance past the group stage. “That’s the first step. If we make it, we can talk about further goals,” he said. “We want to compete at a high level and represent Saudi football well.”
Renard respects his opponents, praising the quality of Trinidad & Tobago, the leadership of Haiti’s coach—an old teammate of his—and the U.S. under Mauricio Pochettino, whom he considers group favorites.
The coach, known for his success in continental tournaments like AFCON, is motivated by the challenge. “I enjoy these major competitions. You need that competitive spirit,” he said. “We’re honored to be invited. Now we must show our best.”
With Saudi fans eager to see their team excel on the continental stage, Renard knows expectations are high. “There’s no excuse. When you wear the national team shirt, you must be ready,” he affirmed.
