Six-time major champion Phil Mickelson checked himself into an addiction treatment facility earlier this year, his representatives confirmed in a statement to TMZ.

Details: The 56 year old LIV Golf star was seeking treatment for family trauma and addiction, and has already checked out of the facility.

The revelation sheds new light on what has been a deeply difficult season for one of the greatest golfers of all time. Mickelson has played only one tournament in 2026, withdrawing from events while citing a family health matter, and has now been revealed to have spent time in a specialized clinic. It is not the first time the American has confronted addiction publicly: back in 2023 he openly admitted to years of struggle with gambling, saying he was back on track to becoming the person he wanted to be. According to his representatives, this time the treatment concerned both family trauma and addiction, and the golfer voluntarily sought help. Mickelson has since left the facility, though no timeline has been given for a possible return to competitive golf.

It's worth noting that Mickelson remains one of the most decorated players in the history of the sport, with six major titles, including his historic PGA Championship victory in 2021, when he became the oldest major winner ever at the age of 50. His move to LIV Golf made him one of the central figures in golf's great schism, but this year the sporting battles have faded into the background. For now, the entire golf world is united in wishing Lefty a full recovery, and his openness about his struggles has already been widely praised as an important step in breaking the stigma around addiction in professional sports.
