Referee Claus Under Fire After Controversial Decisions in Corinthians vs. Santos

Referee Raphael Claus drew heavy criticism for his performance in Corinthians’ 1-0 win over Santos on Sunday, during the ninth round of the 2025 Brasileirão. As reported by Lance!, two of Claus’s decisions became flashpoints during an otherwise uneventful clássico at the Neo Química Arena.
The first incident involved Santos defender Escobar, who had already been booked in the 27th minute. After a second-half clash with José Martínez, Claus showed him another yellow—but only after Corinthians players pointed out that it was his second. The delayed reaction sparked outrage online, with journalists accusing Claus of losing track of the bookings.
Later, in the 84th minute, Yuri Alberto appeared to double Corinthians' lead with a clinical finish after a long ball from Félix Torres. However, Claus overturned the goal following a VAR review, citing a foul by Torres in the buildup. The decision divided opinion and added to the growing frustration over Claus’s officiating.
Despite the controversy, the early goal by Yuri Alberto proved decisive. Corinthians now sit on 13 points, while Santos remain stuck in 19th place with just five. For Santos, the problems go beyond refereeing—but on this day, Claus’s calls were the main talking point.
