On Saturday, November 8, the WTA Finals concluded in Saudi Arabia. The prestigious title and record-breaking prize purse were contested by Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina.
Victory in straight sets went to the world number six, Elena Rybakina. The Kazakhstani star claimed the opening set 6-3, then dominated the tiebreak in the second set, winning it to love.
Remarkably, this triumph marks Rybakina’s first at the WTA Finals. Elena now boasts 10 WTA tournament victories and one Grand Slam title (Wimbledon 2022).
For Sabalenka, this defeat is her second career loss in a WTA Finals decider. In 2022, she fell to Caroline Garcia in the championship match.
It’s worth noting that Rybakina won all five of her matches at this tournament, earning not only 1,500 ranking points but also a record-setting prize purse in women’s tennis history: $5.235 million.
