A day after the most stunning collapse of deadline day, we finally know why Folarin Balogun pulled the plug on Everton.

Monaco and the striker's entourage insist he is ready to play. The fallout was enormous: the collapse also scuppered Chelsea's move for Lamine Camara, while Everton, who sold Beto to Fiorentina and lost Iliman Ndiaye to Manchester City, were left with a paper-thin attack and what The Times called a shambolic window. Balogun, under contract in the Principality until 2028, now returns to Monaco with a point to prove.

It's worth noting that Balogun scored 13 Ligue 1 goals last season and was the United States' top scorer at the World Cup with three goals before their round of 16 exit to Belgium.
