A day after the most stunning collapse of deadline day, we finally know why Folarin Balogun pulled the plug on Everton.

Details: AS Monaco's sporting director has revealed the striker's position: Balogun felt mistreated by Everton, claiming the club's medical team raised doubts about his future and his health, leaving him unwilling to sign a long contract. The American had flown to Merseyside at lunchtime on Tuesday to complete the move, only for the transfer to die after midnight.

The saga turned toxic fast. The clubs had agreed a package worth around £40 million, but Everton's medical staff concluded the 25 year old was not 100 percent fit, with Monaco coach Filipe Luis having admitted Balogun played through the World Cup with a minor injury. The Toffees then reportedly tried to renegotiate the fee downwards, even filing a deal sheet for a two hour extension, and that is when the player walked away. Monaco and the striker's entourage insist he is ready to play. The fallout was enormous: the collapse also scuppered Chelsea's move for Lamine Camara, while Everton, who sold Beto to Fiorentina and lost Iliman Ndiaye to Manchester City, were left with a paper-thin attack and what The Times called a shambolic window. Balogun, under contract in the Principality until 2028, now returns to Monaco with a point to prove.

It's worth noting that Balogun scored 13 Ligue 1 goals last season and was the United States' top scorer at the World Cup with three goals before their round of 16 exit to Belgium.

Reminder: Another boost for the Toffees! Everton agree deal for USMNT striker Balogun.
