Real Madrid players were ready to leave the pitch over the Vinícius incident but changed their minds
In the UEFA Champions League clash, Real Madrid defeated Benfica 1–0, but the situation could have gone very differently, with the team prepared to walk off.
Details: After the match, Spanish midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni revealed that the players had agreed to leave the pitch in response to the incident. However, at the last moment, they reconsidered and decided to return and secure the victory.
Quote: "We all agreed we would leave the field if something like that happened! But then we talked, so we decided to go out there and beat them," Tchouaméni said.
There was further controversy in the match as Vinícius Júnior decided to leave the pitch after hearing racist abuse. He initially refused to continue the game. The stoppage lasted ten minutes.
Recall: Gianluca Prestianni, the Lisbon side’s midfielder, was forced to restrict access to his social media accounts in the middle of the match.
