As reported by Diario AS México, Raúl Jiménez received shattering news just hours after scoring the goal that sent Mexico to the Gold Cup Final: Diogo Jota, his former teammate and close friend, died in a car accident early Thursday morning.

Jota, only 28 years old, lost his life along with his brother André Silva in Zamora, Spain, after their car caught fire and trapped them inside. The tragedy stunned the football world and deeply affected those who knew him personally, especially Jiménez, who shared two memorable seasons with Jota at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The duo formed a lethal partnership from 2018 to 2020, highlighted by the 2019–2020 season when Jiménez scored 17 goals in the Premier League and 10 in the Europa League, with many assisted or facilitated by Jota’s brilliance.

Devastated, Jiménez took to Instagram to say his final goodbye: “It’s hard to receive this kind of news, and I still can’t believe it. An excellent teammate, friend and above all, a great father. Thank you for everything, my friend. We will always remember you. A hug to the sky.”

The loss resonates across the sport, but it hits even harder for those like Jiménez, who not only shared the pitch with Jota but also forged a deep personal bond.
