Ramón Sosa Joins Palmeiras, Extending the Club's Longstanding Paraguayan Legacy
Ramón Sosa’s transfer to Palmeiras marks more than just a high-profile move—it also continues a rich tradition of Paraguayan talent at the São Paulo club. Arriving from Nottingham Forest, the forward becomes the latest name on a distinguished list that includes some of Paraguay’s finest footballers.
As highlighted by Versus, the most prominent figure is current captain Gustavo Gómez, who has amassed 351 appearances and led Palmeiras to numerous titles, including two Copa Libertadores. Before him, Francisco “Chiqui” Arce stood out with 241 matches and 57 goals, winning the Libertadores in 1999.
The first Paraguayan to play for Palmeiras was goalkeeper Juan Miguel Pérez, who joined in 1967 and still ranks third in all-time appearances for a Paraguayan at the club. Other notable names include defenders Carlos Gamarra and Adalberto Román, attackers like Lucas Barrios and José Ortigoza, and goalkeepers such as “Gato” Fernández.
With his arrival, Sosa inherits both a jersey and a legacy. Now, the challenge lies in carving out his own chapter and living up to the high standard set by his compatriots in one of Brazil’s most storied football institutions.
