Racing Leads the Race for Véliz as Boca Struggles With Price Tag

Alejo Véliz has become a top target in Argentina’s transfer window, with both Racing Club and Boca Juniors eager to bring him back from Europe. The 21-year-old striker has struggled for minutes at Tottenham, and according to Bolavip, Racing has made a bold offer: €7 million for 100% of his rights, plus 30% of any future resale.

Boca, meanwhile, has yet to table a formal bid. Coach Miguel Ángel Russo, who managed Véliz at Rosario Central in 2023, reached out directly to the player to express his desire to reunite at Boca. But the club’s board is hesitant, largely due to the high asking price. Tottenham reportedly wants to recoup a significant portion of the $23 million they paid for Véliz just a year ago—a figure Boca is unwilling to match.

While Russo’s personal relationship with Véliz could help sway the player, Racing currently has the upper hand both in negotiations and financial commitment. The club sees Véliz as the ideal replacement for Maximiliano Salas, who is close to joining River Plate.

Unless Boca makes a decisive financial push, Véliz’s return to Argentine football appears more likely to happen in Avellaneda than at La Bombonera.
