The motorsport community mourns the loss of legendary Formula 1 driver and Le Mans champion Hans Herrmann.

Details: The sad news came on Friday, January 9, with Herrmann passing away at the age of 97. He raced for Mercedes in 1954 and 1955. His most iconic achievement was winning the 1970 Le Mans in a Porsche 917K.

It was both the team’s first victory and his final race, as he had promised his wife that he would retire if he triumphed.

Throughout his career, Hans survived several major crashes without sustaining serious injuries. He was the last surviving participant of the 1953 and 1954 F1 seasons and the final Formula 1 driver from the 1950s to have stood on the podium.

Reminder: A minor scandal recently emerged in the world of Formula 1, when several teams lodged complaints against Mercedes and Red Bull over an alleged attempt to circumvent the regulations. The FIA has now responded.
