Quintero Set for River Return in Deal with Deep Personal Meaning
Juan Fernando Quintero is nearing a return to River Plate, a move that carries both footballing and emotional significance. Currently training in Medellín with a personal coach, the Colombian playmaker is expected to fly to Buenos Aires this week once his contract situation with América de Cali is resolved.
Owed six months of wages by the Colombian club, Quintero may terminate his deal unilaterally or through a negotiated transfer fee involving River. Either way, all signs point to a reunion with Marcelo Gallardo, the coach who became a mentor and close friend during Juanfer's first spell at the club.
River have already sent a formal contract proposal extending through 2028, a deal Quintero is eager to sign. At 32, and feeling in peak condition after completing 15 of 21 matches in full during the last semester, Quintero sees this as the final phase of his career and he wants it to unfold in a place he considers home.
Beyond his playing career, he also envisions staying at River in a managerial or sporting director role. His deep ties to Argentina, where he owns property and even produces a personal wine, reinforce that long-term plan.
River still must sort out a foreign player slot. With Adam Bareiro’s exit freeing one spot, Quintero could be registered, though the club is also working on exits for Gonzalo Tapia and Matías Rojas to open more space.
This won’t be just another signing. For Quintero, it’s about returning to where he made history — and where he hopes to finish writing his football story.
