Quarter-final of the Asian Cup. South Korea secured a resilient victory over Australia

On Friday, February 2nd, the quarter-final match of the Asian Cup took place between the national teams of Australia and South Korea.

In the first half, South Korea had more possession of the ball, but their attacks were ineffective. Despite a defensive stance, Australia proved sharper in the attack and managed to score. In the 42nd minute, Craig Goodwin found the net, putting Australia in the lead.

After the break, Korea continued to control the ball and attempted to equalize. Australia maintained a defensive strategy, seeking counter-attacks. A defensive error by the Australian team assisted South Korea. In the sixth minute of injury time, Hwang Ui-jo converted a penalty, leveling the score and forcing the match into extra time.

In the extra periods, the Koreans were once again more assertive and took the lead. Son Heung-min scored a goal in the 104th minute. Shortly after, Australia was reduced to ten players. The Australians had 15 minutes to salvage the game, but South Korea held onto a narrow 2-1 lead, advancing to the semi-finals of the Asian Cup. There, they will face the national team of Jordan.
