Pumas Stand Alone as Mexico's Only 'Big Club' with Local Coach Pumas Stand Alone as Mexico's Only 'Big Club' with Local Coach

In the ever-globalized landscape of Liga MX, Mexican managers have become increasingly rare. As the Apertura 2025 kicks off, just four clubs will be led by domestic coaches—and among the country’s traditional powerhouses, only Pumas boast a Mexican on their bench: Efraín Juárez.

A former club standout, Juárez embodies the UNAM identity. Born in Mexico City and forged at the university club, he’s more than just a coach—he’s a symbol of institutional continuity. At a time when América, Chivas, and Cruz Azul have all turned to foreign leadership, Pumas’ faith in Juárez sets them apart.

Joining him on the short list of Mexican managers are Benjamín Mora (Querétaro), Jaime Lozano (Pachuca), and Gonzalo Pineda (Atlas). Mora, nicknamed "Malayo," took over in 2024 but is still searching for a breakthrough season. Lozano, who was a candidate for the Pumas job before Juárez was chosen, took over at Pachuca following their Club World Cup campaign. Meanwhile, Pineda—though still early in his coaching career—arrives at Atlas aiming to revive the spirit of their past championships.

As Mexican coaches find fewer opportunities in their own league, Pumas' decision to trust Juárez sends a message about heritage and belief in homegrown talent.
