The Premier League is opening the refereeing black box.

Details: The Premier League has officially announced a major expansion of referee and VAR transparency for the 2026/27 season. Supporters will receive more information about controversial decisions through Ref Cam audio, direct explanations from match officials and the publication of verdicts from the independent Key Match Incident Panel.

One of the biggest innovations concerns Ref Cam. Audio clips captured from the referee's perspective will now be used for selected incidents in matches featuring the technology. The Premier League expects Ref Cam to be used in approximately one or two games during each match round.

At the same time, the Premier League Match Centre will provide supporters with more detailed explanations of selected VAR incidents. These updates can contain direct wording from the on-field referee and VAR, including the referee's initial call and an explanation of why VAR decided not to intervene or recommended an on-field review.

  • Selected Ref Cam audio clips will be made available during matches using the technology.
  • Premier League Match Centre updates can include direct quotes from referees and VAR officials explaining key decisions.
  • The results of the Key Match Incident Panel will be published every week on the Premier League website and app.

There is still one important restriction. Live or in-game VAR audio cannot be broadcast under the current IFAB rules. The Premier League and Pro Ref will continue lobbying football's lawmakers for permission to make more communications from match officials available during games.

It is worth noting that the independent KMI Panel has operated since the 2022/23 season. It consists of three former players or coaches, one Premier League representative and one Pro Ref representative, and assesses major incidents such as penalties, red cards and offside decisions as correct or incorrect.
