Portugal vs Croatia: what to know about the match?

Portugal, the inaugural winners of the UEFA Nations League, made history by defeating the Netherlands 1-0 in the 2019 final. Their most recent matches were at the UEFA Euro 2024 in July, where they reached the quarterfinals before losing to France in a penalty shootout. Following the tournament, veteran central defender Pepe officially announced his retirement from the national team. However, Cristiano Ronaldo has been called up for the September matches.

Croatia came very close to winning the last UEFA Nations League, reaching the final but ultimately losing to Spain in a penalty shootout. Their subsequent performance at the UEFA European Championship was disappointing, as they were placed in the "group of death" alongside Spain, Italy, and Albania. Croatia managed only two points from three matches and were eliminated in the group stage. Despite this, Croatia retained their head coach, and Luka Modrić decided not to retire from international duty and will participate in the September matches.
