Yesterday, Porto and Portugal national team goalkeeper Diogo Costa became the main hero of the Euro 2024 Round of 16 match against Slovenia, achieving a unique record in the process.

Costa is the first goalkeeper in European Championship history to not concede a single goal in a penalty shootout.

Previously, two goalkeepers managed to keep clean sheets in World Cup penalty shootouts. In 2006, Ukraine's goalkeeper accomplished this in the Round of 16 match against Switzerland, and in 2022, Yassine Bounou did the same in the Round of 16 match against Spain.

However, in the cases of Bounou and Shovkovskiy, their opponents missed the target once each, whereas Diogo Costa saved all three shots from the Slovenian players.

In the Euro 2024 quarterfinals, Portugal will face France.
