Javier Milei has turned the debates surrounding Argentina’s national team into an international political scandal.
Details: Argentina’s President Javier Milei made explosive accusations following the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup. In an interview with Radio Mitre, he claimed that the social media campaign against the country and its national team was allegedly funded by the governments of Brazil and Mexico, as well as the Democratic Party of the United States.
According to Milei, the Brazilian government contributed the most to this campaign. The Argentine leader stated that about 25% of all resources used came from the Brazilian side.
“This anti-Argentine campaign was also financed by Mexico and the US Democratic Party,” the president declared.
Milei called the alleged organizers of the campaign “progressive think tanks,” who, in his view, do not want “the ideas of freedom to succeed.” He referred specifically to posts accusing the Argentine team of receiving referee assistance at the World Cup, and to criticism of the country over racism allegations.
At the same time, the Argentine president did not publicly present any evidence of the campaign’s financing. Following his statements, Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Argentine ambassador Daniel Raimondi for explanations.
