Police arrest two-time Masters champion and world number one

On Friday, May 17, police arrested two-time Masters champion and current world number one golfer, Scottie Scheffler.

According to ESPN, around 5 a.m. Eastern Time, a shuttle bus fatally struck a man near the Valhalla Golf Club, where the PGA Championship, one of the majors, is taking place. Scheffler was apprehended near the course. The American golfer faces charges of second-degree assault on a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals.

Scheffler was released at 8:40 a.m. Eastern Time, without bail. He arrived at Valhalla less than an hour before his scheduled start in the second round of the PGA Championship. His attorney, Stephen Romines, stated that Scheffler will decide whether he will compete in the second round today. As reported by the PGA, Scottie Scheffler took to the golf course and prepared to start the second round.

The American golfer issued a statement regarding the morning's events:

"This morning, I followed the officers' instructions. The situation was very chaotic, which is understandable given the tragic incident that occurred earlier, and there was a lot of misunderstanding about what I was being asked to do. I never intended to disregard any instructions. I hope to put this aside and focus on golf today.

Of course, all of us participating in the tournament extend our deepest condolences to the family of the man who lost his life in the accident this morning. It truly puts everything into perspective," Scheffler stated.

It should be noted that Scottie Scheffler is an American professional golfer who plays on the PGA Tour. He is currently the world's top-ranked golfer, having first claimed this position in the Official World Golf Ranking in March 2022, and has held it for over 80 weeks. He has won two major championships, the Masters in 2022 and 2024, and became the first player to win the Players Championship consecutively in 2023 and 2024.
