Pochettino on USA’s Semifinal Run: “Willpower Is Non-Negotiable”

After a nerve-wracking penalty shootout win over Costa Rica, Mauricio Pochettino praised the fighting spirit that has defined the United States' journey to the 2025 Gold Cup semifinals. “Willpower is non-negotiable. The star of the night was goalkeeper Matt Freese, who saved three penalties to send the USMNT through. Despite facing harsh criticism for a previous blunder against Haiti, Pochettino kept his faith in the New York City FC shot-stopper. “I’m happy for him and for all our goalkeepers. Freese was Pochettino’s preferred choice over Matt Turner, who had a standout FA Cup campaign with Crystal Palace but lacked consistent minutes. “We wanted to give someone else an opportunity based on Turner’s circumstances. Freese earned it,” Pochettino explained.

The U.S. fell behind early, but Diego Luna’s first international goal leveled the match and kept hope alive after Malik Tillman missed a penalty. “At 1-1 we found calm, and our play became more fluid. We showed glimpses of our top form in the final third,” Pochettino said.

Despite early doubts and lackluster friendlies before the tournament, the coach credited the team’s growth in mentality. “This month has forged a fighting spirit. No excuses. You give everything and overcome adversity,” he emphasized.
