Plettenberg: Niko Kovač and Dortmund agree on contract signing
Borussia Dortmund and renowned Croatian coach Niko Kovač have reached an agreement and will sign a contract, according to insider Florian Plettenberg.
The sticking points that previously prevented the parties from finalizing a deal have been resolved, and Kovač will sign a contract until 2026.
Kovač had been one of the main candidates for the head coach position at Dortmund. However, negotiations were prolonged due to a disagreement over the contract length—Kovač wanted a long-term deal, while Dortmund initially sought a short-term option until the end of the season.
German journalist Patrick Berger adds that a decisive meeting between the parties took place today at a restaurant in Dortmund.
Before the match, Borussia Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl stated on DAZN that the coaching decision is “in the final stretch.”
Niko Kovač began his independent coaching career in 2013 with Croatia’s U21 national team. He later managed the Croatian senior team, Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayern Munich, Monaco, and Wolfsburg, which he left in 2024.
Borussia Dortmund currently sits in 11th place in the Bundesliga. Excluding their ongoing UEFA Champions League match against Shakhtar Donetsk, the team has won just one of their last ten matches.
