Pinnick Calls for Unity as He Warns Bitterness Is Crippling Nigerian Football
Former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Amaju Melvin Pinnick has issued a strong call for a total mindset change in Nigerian football, warning that years of bitterness and personal rivalries are suffocating the game.
Speaking candidly, Pinnick said the country’s football issues go beyond poor administration or funding. He stressed that the deeper crisis lies in the attitude of those involved, saying “Nigerian football needs a genuine orientation and reorientation… among fans, stakeholders, administrators, everyone.” According to him, resentment and emotional hostility now dominate the football space, with many disputes driven by grudges and tribal loyalty rather than principle.
Pinnick explained that this toxic atmosphere was a major reason he stepped away at the end of his tenure, noting, “The atmosphere became chaotic. Leadership should not be about clinging to power or insisting on one individual or group.” He argued that football governance must be rooted in professionalism and national interest, adding that the sport “cannot thrive where people choose sides based on emotion, not merit.”
He urged Nigeria to adopt the stable, forward-thinking leadership seen in other countries and called on fans and stakeholders to unite behind the national team. True progress, he said, depends on healing divisions and prioritising Nigeria over “egos… cliques… grudges.”
