Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang Slams Gabon National Team Over Humiliation and Announces International Retirement

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has announced his retirement from international football and expressed the humiliation he faced after the Panthers' disappointing Africa Cup of Nations campaign in Morocco.

The former Gabon captain’s decision follows a turbulent period for the Panthers after their disappointing Africa Cup of Nations campaign.

It will be recalled that earlier this year, Gabon's government suspended the national team, banned striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and sacked coach Thierry Mouyouma following their exit from the Africa Cup of Nations.

Aubameyang, who is Gabon’s all-time leading goalscorer, was also singled out following the team’s poor performance at the tournament.

Speaking during a television interview, the Deportivo striker revealed that the way he was treated after the competition ultimately influenced his decision to end his international career.

“They humiliated me and tarnished my image when I had played at AFCON while injured,” Aubameyang said during a television interview. “It was the last straw and I’d rather leave it here.”
