Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticised the federal government following reports that the Super Eagles boycotted training over unpaid allowances ahead of Thursday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff against Gabon.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, Obi expressed disappointment that players who have “consistently given their best in representing our dear nation” were being owed allowances. He lamented that:

We always seem to find money to waste on needless lavish spending and political patronage, yet we cannot pay those who patriotically raise our flag… That is what is found in a now disgraced country.

The former Anambra governor described the development as shameful, adding that it sends a damaging message to young Nigerians that “hard work and service are not rewarded.” He called on the authorities to quickly resolve the matter and ensure that national athletes are treated with dignity.

“When those who serve their country are not treated with dignity, it sends the wrong message to our youth… We must do better,” Obi added.

The Super Eagles’ preparations suffered a major setback on Tuesday when players and backroom staff refused to train in Rabat, Morocco, over unpaid allowances and bonuses. Reports suggest the protest stems from long-standing financial disputes with football authorities.

The standoff comes just two days before Nigeria’s crucial semi-final clash against Gabon in the Africa World Cup Playoff Tournament at the Prince Héritier Moulay El Hassan Stadium, Rabat—a match vital to the nation’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
