In an emotional letter shared on social media, French midfielder Dimitri Payet announced his departure from Vasco da Gama. As reported by Extra, he 38-year-old and the club agreed to terminate his contract early, a month before its original end date in July, and under heavy scrutiny after physical and sexual abuse accusations went public.

“This is not goodbye. It’s a see-you-soon. The city with Christ’s open arms is always ready to welcome you back. And I feel that my soul is now also Carioca,” wrote Payet, thanking the club, teammates, and fans for their unwavering support.

Payet joined Vasco in 2023 to great fanfare, welcomed by thousands of supporters at the airport. He became a crucial figure in the club’s battle against relegation, scoring key goals, including a memorable free-kick winner against América-MG. He leaves the club with 8 goals and 16 assists across 77 appearances.

In 2024, the arrival of Philippe Coutinho limited his playing time, but Payet’s legacy remains. His farewell was filled with gratitude and affection for a city and fanbase he now considers part of his identity.
