Toluca defeated Santos Laguna 2-1 in Matchday 14 of the Liga MX Clausura 2025, reaching 30 points and drawing level with Club América at the top of the standings. But it wasn’t just the win that made headlines: Paulinho's remarkable gesture of sportsmanship in the final minutes stole the spotlight.

The Portuguese striker, who scored one of Toluca’s goals, was fouled in the 89th minute by Javier Güémez, who was promptly shown a red card by referee Luis Enrique Santander. However, Paulinho approached the referee to explain that the foul wasn’t serious enough to warrant a sending-off.

Taking Paulinho’s word, Santander overturned the red card and instead issued a yellow to Güémez. The act of fair play was widely praised on social media, with referee analyst “El Cantante Guerrero” applauding the moment as an example of “sporting justice,” even if not strictly by the book.

Toluca’s head coach Antonio Mohamed commented after the match: “They told me it was a fair play gesture. If not corrected on the field, VAR would’ve likely stepped in anyway.” He added that the team is focused on finishing the regular season as leaders.

Paulinho’s decision has sparked debate, but most fans hailed it as a rare and admirable example of honesty in modern football.
