The departure of the Senegal national team’s iconic goalkeeper has not gone unnoticed by the new manager of the Lions of Teranga.

A few days after Édouard Mendy announced his retirement from international football, Patrick Vieira shared his thoughts during his official presentation on Friday 18 September in Dakar. The French manager regards this decision as a significant loss for Senegalese football, whilst respecting the choice made by the former Lions of Teranga goalkeeper.

For Vieira, Édouard Mendy represents far more than just a goalkeeper. Senegal’s new manager highlighted his influence and conduct, both on and off the pitch.

“It’s a loss for Senegalese football.

It’s a decision that must be respected, however difficult it may be. I spoke to Édouard on the phone and I respect this decision.

Édouard is a great player in my eyes. He’s a positive role model, both on and off the pitch. He still has a great deal to offer to the game.

Of course, it’s a loss when you consider his conduct, his talent and the respect he commands.”
