Paredes as Captain? Boca Faces a Leadership Shift With Star’s Return
Leandro Paredes’ return to Boca is more than a high-profile transfer—it’s a homecoming steeped in symbolism. A product of the club and a World Cup winner, his arrival reshapes Boca’s hierarchy, and could soon redefine its leadership on the pitch.
Olé reported he will reclaim the No. 5 shirt, currently worn by Rodrigo Battaglia, in a gesture that reflects Paredes' stature. His debut is expected on July 23 against Atlético Tucumán in the Copa Argentina, a key match with Libertadores 2026 implications. A possible earlier appearance against Unión on July 18 seems unlikely but hasn’t been ruled out.
The real question now is the captaincy. Edinson Cavani wears the armband, but his role in the starting lineup is no longer guaranteed. Paredes, meanwhile, brings influence and deep club identity. He and Cavani were teammates at PSG and maintain a strong personal bond, with Paredes having even helped persuade Cavani to join Boca.
Leadership at Boca has shifted frequently. Cavani inherited the role from Marcos Rojo under Fernando Gago, but Rojo has since been sidelined and is close to an exit. Miguel Merentiel captained the team in the Club World Cup during Cavani’s injury absence. Now, with coach Miguel Russo setting a new direction, Paredes could emerge as the club’s primary leader.
Whether he wears the armband full-time or shares it, Paredes is poised to become the face of Boca’s new era.
