Pape Gueye breaks his silence following his decision to take a break from international football

The midfielder reaffirmed his commitment to the Senegalese national team, whilst insisting that his decision was taken in the best interests of Senegalese football.

Pape Gueye had taken Senegalese supporters by surprise following the Lions of Teranga’s elimination in the round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup. The Senegalese international had announced that he would not return to the national team whilst the current coaching staff remained in place.

But shortly after this statement, Pape Gueye explained the reasons behind his decision. In a message posted on Instagram, the midfielder reiterated his unwavering love for his country and the importance the national team shirt holds for him.

“I love my country and the national team more than anything; I know what it means to wear our colours. I have always put the national team before my personal interests and I will continue to do so.

I feel indebted to Senegal and all Senegalese people, and I know we let you down during this tournament; you deserved much better from us.

Every decision I have made recently has been solely to ensure things move in the right direction, both for the present and, above all, for the future of Senegalese football.”
