Group A of the 2025 Club World Cup features a fierce lineup, with Inter Miami, Al Ahly, Porto and Palmeiras all capable of progressing. While much of the spotlight may fall on Messi’s Inter Miami or European regulars Porto, it would be unwise to overlook Palmeiras, a team that has become synonymous with silverware under Abel Ferreira.

The Brazilian club enters the tournament on the back of an impressive run under their Portuguese coach, who led them to Copa Libertadores titles in 2020 and 2021, domestic league triumphs in 2022 and 2023, and a Club World Cup final appearance in 2021. With that pedigree, Palmeiras are more than contenders—they’re favorites to top the group.

Porto, meanwhile, are reeling from a disappointing campaign. They finished third in the Primeira Liga, 11 points behind the leaders, crashed out early in the domestic cup, and collected just 11 points in the Europa League League Phase. Winning only 10 of their last 23 matches, they face a tall task against a Palmeiras squad brimming with confidence.

The Brazilian side still has young phenom Willian Estevao available before his summer move to Chelsea, while Vitor Roque, a star with over £50 million in transfer fees to his name, adds further firepower. Palmeiras have won eight of their last ten matches and look poised to extend that momentum against an out-of-sorts Porto in their tournament opener.
