Overcoming adversity: tennis player Rebecca Šramková has battled severe vision problems since childhood
Slovak tennis player Rebecca Šramková has opened up about her lifelong struggle with serious vision issues in an interview with Emma magazine. The athlete revealed that she has been dealing with a significant eye condition since childhood.
Šramková explained that her left eye has a -9 diopter prescription and is affected by amblyopia (lazy eye), while her right eye remains perfectly healthy. Due to this extreme difference in vision between both eyes, wearing contact lenses or glasses often causes her severe headaches.
She also mentioned that she has been offered treatment multiple times to correct the defect. However, she fears that undergoing such a procedure could negatively impact her performance on the court, which is why she continues to postpone it.
Despite these serious challenges, Šramková has been achieving impressive results on tour. She is currently ranked 44th in the WTA rankings and recently won her first career title at the Hua Hin tournament. Additionally, she has reached the finals of Jiujiang and Monastir.
At the Australian Open, Šramková advanced to the second round before falling to Iga Świątek.
