The referees working in La Liga matches during the 2023/24 season earn a fixed salary of £124,256 per season, as reported by The Athletic. Additionally, referees on the field receive £4,205 per match. As for VAR referees, their match fee is £2,102.

La Liga also pays referees a fixed amount for image rights from advertising, which amounts to £21,929.

This information has caused a significant uproar among Spanish fans, who believe that these are too much money for the level of performance shown by referees in La Liga.

One of the most scandalous matches in recent months was the meeting between Real Madrid and Valencia at Mestalla. It's worth noting that in that match, at the last seconds of the game, Brahim Diaz delivered a cross into the penalty area, and just as the ball was in the air, referee Jesus Gil Manzano blew the final whistle. Immediately after that, Jude Bellingham scored a header goal, which should have been the winning goal for Real Madrid.
