Orlando Pirates Eye Fawaaz Basadien to Strengthen Left-Back Position

Looking to bolster their squad for the second half of the season, Orlando Pirates are targeting Stellenbosch FC’s outstanding left-back Fawaz Basadian. Known for his adaptability, reliability and attacking prowess, Basadian has emerged as a key target for Pirates, who are looking to solve their problems at left-back.

Basadien has been a pivotal player for Stellenbosch this season, making 20 appearances across all competitions. His contributions include five goals, three assists, and a crucial role in the club’s defensive successes, including their impressive CAF Confederation Cup campaign.

The 26-year-old has solidified his status as one of South Africa's best football players by earning a berth in the Bafana Bafana team for the 2025 AFCON qualifiers thanks to his outstanding performances.

For the left-back position, the Pirates currently depend on experienced players Paseka Mako, Deon Hotto, and Innocent Maela. However, reports suggest that head coach Jose Riveiro wants to bring fresh energy to this role. Hotto has been the most reliable option this season, with three goals and four assists in 18 matches. On the other hand, Mako has faced injury issues, and Maela hasn’t played much.

Earlier, Basadien was close to joining Kaizer Chiefs, but the deal didn’t happen, and he continued to perform well at Stellenbosch. Now, with the Pirates showing interest, the competition to sign him could heat up.

It will be difficult to persuade the left-back to leave in the middle of the season, even though the Pirates are eager to sign him during the January transfer window. Given how important Pasadian is to Stellenbosch, who are presently fourth in the Pakistan Super League, they are sure to turn down any bids.

The Buccaneers' efforts to strengthen their defensive line in preparation for competition in the PSL and CAF Champions League will be eagerly watched by fans.
