One flight away from Anfield! Mbappé reveals how his mother almost convinced him to join Liverpool
Kylian Mbappé has revealed how close he came to joining Liverpool before making the biggest decision of his early career.
Details: In an interview with The Athletic, the Real Madrid superstar admitted that Liverpool were a serious option when he was preparing to leave Monaco in 2017. His mother, Fayza Lamari, was a huge admirer of Jürgen Klopp and wanted her son to move to Anfield. Mbappé even met the German coach aboard a private jet, where they discussed Liverpool's plans while the aircraft circled in the air.
Mbappé recalled that Klopp was explaining his project during the flight, but the Frenchman felt the coach hardly needed to convince him. He already knew Liverpool were a massive club and had enormous respect for the German manager. The striker also revealed that his mother visited Anfield, attended matches and fell in love with the atmosphere. She was convinced that Liverpool would be the perfect destination for her son.
However, Mbappé ultimately went against his mother's wishes. He explained that, at that stage of his career, he wanted to remain in France and represent the city where he was born and raised. The opportunity to establish himself as a star in Paris proved more attractive than moving abroad, despite his admiration for Klopp and Liverpool.
It's worth noting that Mbappé joined Paris Saint-Germain from Monaco on loan in August 2017, before the move became permanent in a deal worth €180 million. The French forward spent seven seasons in Paris before joining Real Madrid in 2024.
